People often ask me, what’s the best 4k (UHD) TV you can buy for under $1000? Here's what I tell them...
THINGS TO AVOID:
1. Don’t buy a cheap TV from an Unknown Brand.
Sure, you can go out and purchase the cheapest tv that money can buy, but you may regret it. As soon as the warranty runs out (or sooner), you start having issues and you're stuck with a lemon. Investing in a good brand and a well reviewed and highly rated model is wise.
2. Don’t buy a TV that will be outdated or obsolete soon after you buy it.
Technology changes fast and innovations happen all of the time. The television you buy today will eventually become outdated as newer models are released. That being said, purchasing a TV with the following list of features, will help give your television greater longevity...
5 THINGS YOU MUST HAVE:
1. 4K Resolution
4K or UHD (Ultra-High-Definition) TVs have the resolution of 3840x2160 pixels. Older televisions have a lower resolution (often 1920x1080 or less). This extra resolution creates a better viewing experience (especially on large screens). 4K images are highly detailed and appear to pop off the screen. Although most television stations still broadcast in HD (like ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX), I always advise investing in 4K because 4K content is now abundantly available. These sources include: Netflix, Youtube, Amazon, iTunes with an Apple TV 4K, VUDU, UltraFlix, PlayStation Video, Sony's Ultra Streaming Service, Ultra HD Blu-ray Players, Google Play and more. 4K/Ultra HD has become the new standard.
2. HDR10 or DOLBY VISION
Your next tv should come equipped with HDR10 or Dolby Vision. HDR stands for High Dynamic Range. HDR10 and Dolby Vision are two popular HDR formats. Both provide a higher level of contrast between light and dark images on the screen to create a much more realistic image. HDR also provides increased color depth. Both HDR10 and Dolby Vision use metadata that rides along the video signal down an HDMI cable and allows the source video to tell a TV how to display colors. HDR will definitely improve your visual experience, so I highly recommend it.
3. A Smart TV
A Smart TV goes beyond just watching broadcast television channels from a source like an antenna or a cable box. Smart TVs connect to the internet an allow you to stream shows, movies and games. Popular Smart TV apps include: Netflix, Youtube, Amazon, HBO, Hulu, BBC News and more.
4. Good Sound
Your eyes should not have all of the fun. A good movie or tv show not only needs to look stunning, it also needs to sound great. Built in television speakers have come a long way, but for added enjoyment, consider purchasing a sound bar or a surround sound system (with multiple wired or wireless speakers).
5. The Right Size
You want the right size tv for the room you will be viewing it in. As a general rule, small rooms need smaller TVs and bigger rooms need bigger TVs. This has to do with how far away you sit from the screen. The further away you are, the bigger the TV should be. Most people sit about 9 feet from their TV. At 9 feet away, I recommend at least a 50-55 inch TV.
DO YOUR HOMEWORK OR LET US DO IT FOR YOU
Finally, do your research. By research, I mean carefully look at the specs (make sure they meet your requirements -- like the ones I listed above) and read customer reviews. Sure, there will always be both negative and positive reviews for a product, but if a TV gets consistently good reviews, you will feel better about purchasing it. If a product gets consistently bad reviews, stay far away from it!
